Unusual First Dance Tunes

We’ve played at hundreds of weddings, and seen so many first dances that we always enjoy hearing unusual first dance tunes.

From couples who’ve paid to have lessons, through to those stumbling around a dance floor, not because they want to, but because it’s a wedding and they feel they must have a first dance. Times have changed now, so please know – if you don’t want a first dance – you don’t have to do one. It’s fine – the day is yours so don’t force yourself if it makes you uncomfortable.

A First Dance Is Not Obligatory!

However – if you do have a dance – make sure the DJ or the band invites everyone to form a circle around you before you start – that way you have a ring of support and you’ll get some great photos taken too. And also make sure the band or DJ invites the crowd onto the floor to enjoy the last bit with you (unless you’re doing a specially-choreographed performance). That way it’s a smoother ending, and a seamless slide into either the DJ or the band’s first number. People will already be dancing and in place to get the party started.

But here are some of our more interesting and unusual tracks we’ve encountered:

ALL I WANT IS YOU – Barry Louis Polisar (from the film Juno)
A cooky, funny little song that would suit a young, cooky couple who like to do it a bit differently.

SUDDENLY – Angry Anderson (from Neighbours)
Well-known for being in the Aussie soap, but still a classic in a cheeseboard kind of way!

FEELS LIKE HOME – Chantal Kreviazuk – (From My Sister’s Keeper)
Smoochy, a bit schmaltzy but beautiful all the same.

EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC (The Police)
It says it in the title don’t you think?

HO HEY (The Lumineers)
We’ve played this twice so far. Love the chorus ‘I belong to you. You belong to me’ – perfect. (Not so sure about the verse that says ‘don’t think you’re right for him’ – but we’ll brush past that because everybody else seems to)!

YOU CAN RING MY BELL (Anita Ward)
Nudge nudge…. A cheeky song full of suggestion. Cover the father of the bride’s eyes!

GET DOWN ON IT (Kool & The Gang)
Fantastic song to get everyone involved right from the off!

I’M ALWAYS TOUCHED BY YOUR PRESENCE DEAR (Blondie)
A cool choice that will press the buttons of any 80s fans

1949 (Mallory Knox)
Atmospheric. Romantic. Cool….
